The cartridge contains the liquid which is vaporised, producing the smoke. This liquid contains only water, propylene glycol, a scent that emulates a tobacco flavour, and a membrane to suspend the ingredients.

Inhaling or 'smoking' the electronic cigarette triggers the ioniser to vaporise a small amount of the cartridge liquid, releasing a simulated smoke that is actually only a water vapour mist. This mist harmlessly evaporates into the air within a few seconds.
